How this calculator works

The core math: Annual salary = Hourly rate × Hours per week × Weeks per year. We run this both directions, so whichever field you change last drives the conversion.

Most salaried roles assume 40 hours a week and 52 weeks a year (2,080 hours). Hourly workers without paid time off usually get 50 or 51 weeks of actual pay, not 52. Adjust the weeks field if your situation doesn't match the default.

FAQ

How many hours in a working year?

The standard is 2,080 hours (40 × 52). If you take 2 weeks of unpaid time off, you're closer to 2,000. Salaried employees with paid vacation still hit 2,080 because they get paid through their time off.

What's a good hourly rate for a $X salary?

Divide by 2,080 for a rough salary-to-hourly. $50,000 salary ÷ 2,080 = about $24/hour. That's the W-2 equivalent; if you want the same money as a freelancer, check our freelance hourly rate calculator.

Does this handle overtime?

No, this is base-rate only. Overtime in most US jobs is 1.5x your hourly rate for hours over 40 in a week, but it doesn't translate cleanly to an annual salary.

What about bonuses and commission?

Those aren't included here. Add them on top of the calculated annual salary if you want total compensation.

How do I calculate take-home pay after taxes?

Use our paycheck calculator to estimate federal, state, and FICA taxes and get your take-home number.
